Today, the Golden Helix Foundation and the Section of Pharmacogenomics and Pharmacogenetics of International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (IUPHAR) have entered into a collaborative agreement to foster their cooperation and to advance basic and clinical research in pharmacogenomics, its clinical translation and educational and learning activities.

The Section of Pharmacogenomics and Pharmacogenetics is a formal section of IUPHAR, a non-profit association representing the interests of pharmacologists throughout the world and whose mission is: Better Medicines through Global Education and Research. The Sections aims are, to promote the exchange of pharmacogenetic knowledge by organization of symposia and workshops in the field of pharmacogenetics and genomics, to evaluate the clinical impact of pharmacogenetics, to assist with the development and maintenance of drug-related pharmacogenetic databases and to create a population based biobank to conduct translational research in clinical pharmacogenomics.

In furtherance of their mutual interest in improving fundamental and clinical pharmacogenomics and its translation into clinical practice, the two organizations have agreed: (a) cooperate and collaborate on programs and activities of mutual interest, (b) work together to provide education symposia/workshops in developing countries and regions, and (c) foster collaborative research to better understand the genetic basis for ethnic diversity in the response to and adverse effects from medicines. Also, from time to time, the organizations may cooperate in providing speakers, programs and supports for each others meetings.

The cooperation between these international organizations and the closely related to the Golden Helix Foundation Genomic Medicine Alliance, are expected to catalyze their invovlement in research and educational activities in the field of Genomic Medicine.

The 2014 Golden Helix Symposium was co-organized in Belgrade Serbia, October 30th - November 1st, 2014, by the Golden Helix Foundation, jointly with the Institute of Molecular Genetics and Genetic Engineering. This international conference marked the official launch of the Genomic Medicine Alliance and the 1stGenomic Medicine Alliance - Public Health Genomics Prize, awarded to the work of Chondrou and coworkers, entitled "Differential molecular profiling of human hematopoietic tissues during human ontogenesis: Implications for -type hemoglobinopathies therapeutics". This award is a joint initiative of Genomic Medicine Alliance and Karger, through its scientific journal Public Health Genomics, the Alliance's official journal.

This meeting was attended by over 250 registered speakers and participants from over 20 countries.

Next year, the Golden Helix Symposia travel to Asia, specifically in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for the forthcoming 2015 Golden Helix Symposium (March 11-13, 2015), which will mark the official partnership of the Genomic Medicine Alliance and the Southeast Asian Pharmacogenomics (SEAPharm) Consortium.

The 2014 Golden Helix Summer School was successfully organized in Apollo resort hotel in Aegina island, Greece, 11-15 September 2014. The meeting was attended by more than 80 registered participants from over 20 countries and attended lectures from internationally renowned speakers from Europe, the US, Middle East and Asia, including an EMBO lecture from Prof. Doug Higgs (Oxford, UK). Two trophies were presented to Ms. Marina Bartsakoulia (Newcastle, UK) and Prof. Sonja Pavlovic (Belgrade, Serbia) for submitting the two best abstracts for this meeting.

We believe that this meeting, co-organized by the Golden Helix Foundation and the Genomic Medicine Alliance, has set a high standard and we look forward to the co-oganization of the next Golden Helix Summer School in 2016. Please check back soon for more updates.

We are pleased to announce that the 2015 Golden Helix Symposium will be co-organized with the University of Malaya, March 11-13, 2015 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The 2015 Golden Helix Symposium will mark the official partnership between the Genomic Medicine Alliance and the Southeast AsianPharmacogenomics Consortium (SEAPharm Consortium).

The Symposium will feature lectures from over 20 international speakers not only from Southeast Asia but also from Europe and the United States.

Also, the 2015 Genomic Medicine Alliance - Public Health Genomics award will be presented to the best abstract submitted for presentation at this event.

Please check back this website for regular program updates. On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we look forward to welcoming you to Malaysia next spring.

The deadline for abstract submission for the forthcoming 2014 Golden Helix Summer School is extended to July 18th, 2014. To register to attend this important scientific event and to submit an abstract please click here.
