Τhe 24th Golden Helix Pharmacogenomics Day was successfully organized in Athens, Greece on December 14th, 2023 in Zappeion Megaron, as a satellite event of the 3rd Greek National Personalized Medicine Conference. The meeting was co-organized by the Research and Educational Institute for Health (REdI4Health) and the Golden Helix Foundation.
The Golden Helix Foundation organizes, since 2009, the Golden Helix Pharmacogenomics Days, an international educational event series that are organized in major cities and academic hospitals. The aim of this event is to provide timely updates in the field of pharmacogenomics to the local biomedical scientists and healthcare providers, to inform them on the application of pharmacogenomics in modern medical practice, and to bring together faculty members from universities and research institutes from the local scientific arena working in the field of pharmacogenomics in order to initiate collaborative projects in this field to the benefit of society. Contrary to the Golden Helix Symposia, the Golden Helix Pharmacogenomics Days have a more educational flavor, span between half-day to a full day in length and attract on average 150-200 participants.
This international event was open to biomedical scientists, hospital and general pharmacists, specialists, general practitioners, medical students, laboratory technicians, regulators, healthcare insurers and others interested in pharmacogenomics. A fruitful educational experience, with a plethora of scientific topics being discussed, including Pharmacogenomics, Personalised Medicine, Health Economics, Bioinformatics and Bioethics. Pharmacogenomics was underlined by the speakers as one of the emerging dicsiplines in modern medicine, especially after the recent results from the prospective clinical studies in Europe and the Middle East. Also, the speakers highlighted the importance of economic evaluation in the decision process of the reimbursement of the new interventions like genetic testing. During the conference it was also mentioned by many speakers that bioinformatics plays a crucial role in whole genome sequencing with many algorithms being designed in order to ameliorate drug design processes and clinical decision support.
Having received several positive comments, the 24th Golden Helix Pharmacogenomics Day was both educational and inspirational for junior scientists and students. Looking forward for the next one!
