The 2016 Golden Helix Summer School with the theme “Cancer Genomics and individualized treatment” was successfully organized in Syros island, Greece, 22-26 September 2016. The conference was attended by approximately 100 participants and speakers from over 20 countries from Europe, Latin America, Middle East, Asia and the United States. The event featured high level scientific lectures, workshops and a career development session, in addition to short presentations by junior researchers and graduate students, who presented their abstracts, which were published in a Supplemental issue of Public Health Genomics, the official journal of the Genomic Medicine Alliance. The lectures in the scientific program were distributed in 5 sessions, related to genome discovery in cancer, pharmacogenomics in cancer treatment, adjacent technologies in cancer genomics, and economic evaluation in cancer genomics. The keynote lecture was delivered by Professor Magnus Ingelman-Sundberg (Karolinska Institutet, Sweden). Most importantly, the inclusion of the general public information session, specifically aiming to raise awareness of the general public regarding the most recent developments in cancer treatment and prevention, was a distinct plus. The social activities contributed towards creating a relaxing environment among participants and speakers that was conductive to establishing new or strengthening existing collaborations and/or opened up training opportunities.
